Case Study: HSC Systems Integrates AmpVortex Audio with ABB, Vimar and 1Home through KNX

Bringing Professional Multi-Room Audio into a Multi-Brand KNX Smart Building Ecosystem

A smart building is rarely built around a single technology or manufacturer.

In the Bendera Villa project in Kenya, HSC Systems is integrating the AmpVortex multi-room audio platform into a broader KNX environment incorporating ABB, Vimar and 1Home.

The project demonstrates an important principle behind AmpVortex:

Audio should not remain an isolated subsystem. It should become part of the wider smart building infrastructure.

Through native KNX integration, AmpVortex allows HSC Systems to bring professional multi-room audio control into the same KNX environment used for other building functions — while maintaining the freedom to use different KNX interfaces throughout the property.

The Project

HSC Systems is deploying AmpVortex as part of the KNX system in the Bendera Villa project in Kenya.

Rather than introducing a separate proprietary control ecosystem specifically for audio, HSC Systems is integrating AmpVortex directly with the project’s existing KNX infrastructure.

A key part of the integration is the ABB IPS/S 3.1.1 KNX IP Interface, which provides the connection between the Ethernet network and the KNX bus using KNXnet/IP Tunneling. ABB specifies five tunneling servers for the IPS/S 3.1.1. ABB Library

The integration includes:

This architecture allows audio to become part of the overall smart building experience rather than operating as a standalone system.

ABB IPS/S 3.1.1: Connecting AmpVortex to the KNX Infrastructure

The ABB IPS/S 3.1.1 plays an important role in the project’s KNX architecture.

It is a KNX IP Interface rather than a KNX IP Router, connecting the KNX bus to the Ethernet network and allowing communication using the KNXnet/IP tunneling protocol. ABB Library

This allows AmpVortex to communicate with the KNX infrastructure without requiring a proprietary audio control gateway.

The use of the ABB IPS/S 3.1.1 is also significant for AmpVortex because it demonstrates integration through a standard KNX IP Interface in a real-world KNX installation.

For KNX integrators, this provides greater flexibility when incorporating professional multi-room audio into existing or newly designed KNX projects.

ABB H8237: Audio from the KNX Touchscreen

HSC Systems successfully integrated AmpVortex with the ABB H8237 IP Touch 10.

The ABB touchscreen provides a centralized interface for KNX building functions. By mapping AmpVortex functions through KNX group addresses, audio control can be incorporated into the same environment used for the rest of the property.

Depending on the configuration, AmpVortex exposes KNX functions including:

  • Zone volume
  • Mute
  • Source selection
  • Playback control
  • Audio status
  • Track and playback information

For the user, this means audio does not require a completely separate control system.

For the integrator, it means the audio platform can be incorporated into the existing KNX project architecture.

Vimar: The Same Audio Platform, a Different KNX Interface

Following the ABB integration, HSC Systems also proceeded with integration using Vimar KNX controls.

This is particularly significant because ABB and Vimar represent different approaches to interacting with a KNX installation.

A sophisticated touchscreen may make sense in one part of a property, while a conventional physical KNX wall control may be more appropriate elsewhere.

AmpVortex does not require the project to standardize on one proprietary audio controller.

Instead:

Different KNX Interfaces → Same KNX Infrastructure → Same AmpVortex Audio Platform

This gives the system integrator greater freedom to design the user experience around the requirements of each room.

Extending the KNX Integration into 1Home

HSC Systems is also extending the project into 1Home.

Because AmpVortex audio functions are already represented within the KNX system through KNX group addresses, HSC Systems can work on incorporating those existing KNX objects into the 1Home environment.

The architecture becomes:

This is an important distinction.

The objective is not to create another isolated proprietary integration for every control platform. Instead, KNX acts as the common integration layer.

As the 1Home implementation progresses, HSC Systems is evaluating how the AmpVortex KNX audio objects can be presented and used within the wider 1Home environment.

Why This Architecture Matters

Premium villas and smart buildings increasingly combine products from multiple manufacturers.

A project might use an ABB touchscreen in one location, Vimar wall controls in another and a broader visualization or smart-home platform at system level.

Traditionally, audio can become another technology island requiring its own app, controller and integration work.

AmpVortex takes a different approach.

By making KNX a native part of the audio platform, the integrator can treat audio as another building function.

Lighting.
HVAC.
Shading.
Security.
Audio.

All can participate in the wider building-control architecture.

More Than a KNX-Controlled Amplifier

The AmpVortex platform goes beyond basic volume and mute commands.

Its multi-room platform combines:

8 independent audio zones
8× native AirPlay 2 streams
8× Google Cast streams on supported models
Spotify Connect and network streaming
DSP and matrix routing
Multi-channel amplification
Native KNX integration
Control4, RTI and Web API integration

For larger hospitality and commercial projects, the AmpVortex ecosystem can also extend into Dante/AES67 and 70V/100V distributed audio.

This combination allows the same underlying audio philosophy to extend from premium residential installations to larger professional AV and smart-building projects.

A Real-World KNX Integration in Kenya

The work carried out by HSC Systems at Bendera Villa in Kenya demonstrates more than compatibility with individual products.

It demonstrates a broader architecture:

The control interface can change. The audio infrastructure does not have to.

ABB can provide the touchscreen.

Vimar can provide the physical KNX controls.

The ABB IPS/S 3.1.1 provides the KNX IP interface between the Ethernet network and KNX infrastructure.

1Home can provide an additional layer within the wider smart-home environment.

And AmpVortex remains the professional multi-room audio platform behind them.

For KNX integrators, this means greater freedom in system design and fewer isolated technology ecosystems.

For the end user, it means audio can feel like a natural part of the building rather than an independent system.
